Residents of Carbon County are under unconstitutional 24/7 video surveillance.

Flock Safety, founded in 2017, sells AI surveillance technology to private businesses and municipal governments. Governments adopt this technology to catch criminals, but often don't consider how it affects innocent people.

Since 2021, Flock has installed over 100,000 Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) across the nation. Carbon County has 16 of these cameras.

It seems like a small number, but any amount of these cameras can allow Flock and its associates (or even unauthorized individuals) to access a history of your location. ALPRs can read your license plate and log physical information from your car like its color, make/model, any physical damage, and stickers/decals. They then upload the information to the vendor's online database, which logs your location and checks your vehicle against the police department's Hot List.

This ALPR network can theoretically be useful to track and apprehend criminals, but claims that they actually help are largely unfounded. Rather than just the local police, ALPR networks can be configured to share data with third-party agencies or police departments anywhere in the nation (and sometimes are by default). Flock itself has been caught sharing this data with federal agencies such as ICE and the CBP, while law enforcement officials and Flock employees directly access the Flock system for their own personal benefit, whether it be pitching the system to prospective clients or stalking an ex lover.

Even if you aren't a suspect or you haven't done anything wrong, there is still very real concern. Videos of your location are sent to third-party workers overseas while innocent people just like you are being pulled over and violently confronted after law enforcement officials blindly trust false flags from their ALPRs. Sometimes, innocent people are thrown behind bars for weeks for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
