On August 3rd at 6:30pm, Lehighton Borough is having a Borough Council meeting and I will be there.
Lehighton Borough's website states "the public is welcome to attend," while each council starts with a "Hearing of Persons Present." This is the perfect time for us, the people, to voice our concerns with the cameras. Not only that, but Lehighton is the perfect place for us to start.
As we know from our requests, Lehighton Borough only has two cameras on its property. These two cameras have been installed by other municipalities, namely Franklin Township and Mahoning Township.
Since other Townships installed the cameras, Lehighton had to license their land for the Townships to use. Lehighton has a license agreement with Mahoning Township and Franklin Township to install the cameras on their property. Both of these contracts outline some terms, one of them stating that the license agreement "is revocable by [Lehighton Borough] at any time." It goes on to state that Lehighton can give 30 days' notice to revoke the agreement, time given to Flock Safety to remove the cameras. In turn, Flock agrees to remove the cameras within that time.
This is huge, since Lehighton doesn't need to wait until a contract expires or even do anything themself. Removing the cameras from their property costs precisely zero dollars and takes zero time for municipal employees. If Lehighton's council sides with us and proclaims that the cameras are a gross violation of our privacy, the cameras can be gone in no time.
